Verzwirnt: Live Coding with Zwirn

“Uzu” is a new term for live-coding languages based on the manipulation of temporal functions. Zwirn is one of the newest Uzu languages and an attempt to push this idea to its limits. With simple syntax and high modularity, Zwirn is a tool for both rapid improvisation and structured algorithmic compositions.
At the beginning of this workshop, we’ll compare Zwirn with other Uzu languages such as TidalCycles and Strudel. Afterward, we’ll focus on the unique features of Zwirn and dive deep into the peculiarities of the Uzu world. Prerequisites: A basic understanding of Tidal or Strudel is helpful but not required.
Martin Gius
Martin Gius is a musician and computer scientist based in Vienna. He is primarily interested in the design of live-coding languages and playful approaches in the field of computer science. Over the past few years, he has developed the small live-coding language Zwirn.
In addition to organizing regular live-coding meetups in Vienna, Martin has led workshops at the International Live-Coding Conference 2025 in Barcelona, the AMRO Festival 2024 in Linz, and re:publica 2024 in Berlin. As a musician, Martin is active in the local scene in Vienna and has performed at events such as Sonic Territories, Velak, Kv.r, Lifespeed, and Dronaucanal. He has also performed internationally in South Korea, France, Germany, Slovakia, and Italy.
